Approach and Background:
David B. Tate, Ph.D.
My approach to counseling is, first and foremost, founded on the quality of the therapy relationship itself. Over the past 35 years in the mental health profession and for 25 years in private practice as a licensed psychologist in St. George, Utah, I have specialized in the fields of counseling, health, transpersonal, and clinical psychology. I provide individual and relationship counseling in an emotionally safe, supportive environment, drawing on a variety of approaches tailored to meet your needs and support your healing and growth. My integrative approach includes the exploration of mental, emotional, physical, developmental, spiritual, and interpersonal factors. Practical skill development is emphasized. I also work with individuals with a wide variety of conditions and needs, including via tele-therapy when needed or desired (see Counseling Services) and accept many different insurances (see Payment Options).
A mindful and heart-full approach to life and counseling is my primary intention and practice.
I have taught Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) classes (click here for details) for over 30 years. My doctoral dissertation was an early contribution to the now large body of research supporting the significant and substantial mental, emotional and physical health benefits usually realized by MBSR group participants. As one of the founders and teachers of Intermountain Healthcare's Stress Reduction Clinic (1990-1995), we developed what the originator of MBSR, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, noted at the time was “the oldest, largest and best replication of our program."
I have also provided consultations and mindfulness seminars for businesses and organizations including Nike, Ernst and Young, New Line Cinema, Abbott Laboratories, AT&T, the National Make-A-Wish Foundation, Zion National Park, and the NCAA. In 1995 I helped develop the first "mindfulness-based" health and wellness resort, being the initial Lead Mindfulness Instructor and later the Program Director at Miraval, Life in Balance.
